Chiang Rai, Thailand Travel Guide

A Quick Summary of the Trip
Chiang Rai is a peaceful and cultural gem in northern Thailand. Known for its temples, tea plantations, and serene countryside, it feels quieter and less developed than nearby Chiang Mai, offering travelers a slower pace. Despite its sleepy reputation, Chiang Rai has some of the country’s most striking modern temples and natural beauty — making it an unforgettable stop on any northern Thailand journey.

When to Visit

  • Best months: October–February, when the weather is cool and refreshing, perfect for walking the town and visiting temples.

  • Rainy season (June–September): Waterfalls and rainforests are at their most dramatic, but pack waterproof gear.

  • Hot season (March–May): Still visitable, but midday can be uncomfortable for exploring outdoors.

Getting There

  • International arrivals: Fly into Bangkok first. From there, take a 1-hour domestic flight to Chiang Rai.

  • From Chiang Mai: A scenic 3-hour car or bus ride connects Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

Essential Packing List

  • Mosquito repellent.

  • Lightweight waterproof jacket (if traveling in rainy season).

  • A warm layer — evenings and scooter rides can be chilly compared to southern Thailand.

  • Respectful clothing for visiting temples (shoulders and knees covered).

Suggested Budget

  • Cafés and street food are inexpensive, often just a few euros per meal.

  • Most temples are free or have very small entry fees (e.g., Wat Rong Khun ~100 THB).

  • Transport is affordable by tuk-tuk or scooter rental. Hiring a private driver or car will raise costs.
